Topaz comes in almost every color or the rainbow, ranging from brilliant blues to rich cognac. The most valuable blue Topaz is a rich dark blue. Topaz was prized by mainy ancient civilizations includes the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans. The origin of the name Topaz is derived from the name Topazos which was a small island in the Red Sea, where the Romans obtained a stone which they called Topazos. According to tradition, Topaz is said to bring peace and tranquility to the wearer. It has an 8 on the Mohs harness scale. Blue Topaz is the birthstone of December.
