Ruby, the gem of fire and passion. Ancient cultures believed the inner red was due to an indistinguishable inner fire, leading to the belief that wearing it would lead to power and courage. The origin of the name Ruby is derived from the Latin word "ruber" which means red reflecting the color of the stone. They come in a range of natural colors and shades including pinkish, purplish, orangey and deep red; the most valuable of which are a deep red color. They are a 9 on the Mohs hardness scale.
