The stepped cut of the emerald cut was invented to deal with the natural large inclusions that are often occurring in Emeralds. Soon after diamond cutters discovered that the same cut was useful for other stones, including diamonds. Due to the small amount of wastage in the cutting process, emerald cut diamond often are found at a much lower price point than round brilliant cut diamonds. The stepped cut of the stone provides a different look then traditional brilliant faceting. High quality diamonds are normally selected to be fashioned in an emerald cut, as the flaws are visible. The emerald cut does not reflect as much light as many types of brilliant cut diamonds, but is a very popular choice because of the unique appearance that they present.
