Alexandrite

Alexandrite was discovered in the Ural Mountains in 1831 on the birthday of Czar Alexander II, who made it his official gem. Alexandrite is famous for its rare display of color change. When the light is natural sunlight or fluorescent light, the natural stone will appear to be green; while under incandescent light the stone will appear greenish red. It is a very rare stone, and often will reach a very high per-carat price. It is a 9 on the Mohs hardness scale. Alexandrite is one of the official birthstones for June.
